The European Union of Women Mujeres en Igualdad Marina Alta (EUWMA) expresses its absolute condemnation of the incident that took place during the solemn procession in honour of the Virgen del Carmen in Moraira on Thursday 16 July 2026.

As the traditional procession travelled along Calle Almacenes, a person reportedly threw a bucket of water containing faecal matter from a small window above the street. The contents fell onto members of the Teulada-Moraira municipal corporation and other people taking part in the procession. Councillors from both the governing administration and the opposition were among those affected, with some forced to leave the event to shower and change their clothing.

The incident occurred during the solemn land-and-sea procession, one of the most important and deeply valued events in Moraira’s annual festivities. The procession honours the Virgen del Carmen and has particular significance for the town’s fishing and maritime community.

This was not a harmless prank or a legitimate expression of disagreement. It was a degrading and potentially dangerous act of aggression, carried out against people participating peacefully in a religious, cultural and community event.

EUWMA stands in solidarity with the mayor, councillors, municipal representatives and members of the public affected by this disgraceful act. Many of those involved are friends and valued partners of our association, people who work tirelessly in the service of their municipality and its residents.

We are particularly concerned that the attack affected representatives from different political groups. Whatever disagreements may exist within public life, no elected representative, public servant or member of the community should be subjected to humiliation, intimidation or physical aggression.

Democracy depends upon our ability to disagree without dehumanising one another. Political frustration, personal grievance or ideological opposition can never justify violence. When contempt replaces dialogue, it damages not only the immediate victims but the fabric of the entire community.

The Teulada Town Council has publicly condemned the incident and confirmed that it has been reported to the appropriate authorities so that the person responsible can be identified. At the time of publication, no arrest or identification had been publicly confirmed.

We also urge everyone to reject attempts to excuse, minimise or politicise what occurred.

The fiestas of Teulada-Moraira belong to the whole community. They should be occasions of tradition, faith, culture, friendship and shared celebration, not opportunities for hatred or intimidation.

To our friends in Teulada-Moraira, and to every person affected, we offer our sincere support. An attack intended to degrade individuals must not be allowed to diminish the dignity, unity and strength of the wider community.
